On a clear, sunny Saturday morning a few weeks ago a friend of mine invited me to participate in a most unusual event. The celebration of a newly reconstructed bridge in Denver’s Barnum neighborhood on the city’s westside.
So, what was so special about this bridge? It’s more like an overpass really. Except that the design of this one moves people. Not just cars. A short walk away is a new light rail station. In urban planning terminology, this bridge was walkable and bikeable. Pedestrian sidewalks continued across both sides of the bridge as did bicycle lanes. A modest measure of independence and safety these residents found worth celebrating.
